Our Free SHS Strategy Increased Teachers Contact Hours With Students – NAPO

Minister for Education; Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh has said that the implementation of the Free SHS was a good move as it increased Teachers’ contact hours with students.

The Minister who had earlier stated that the Free SHS made schooling like that of America explained that previously, students stayed home for five months, one and half weeks (1st term Easter break, 2nd term Easter break & Long vacation).

He further stated that after the change in the structure of schooling, students now spend only two semesters in school and enjoy six months of vacation but the amount of time used by teachers in teaching (contact hours) has increased to one thousand one hundred and forty hours which is far more than it was previously.

Adding to this, the Minister said core text books has been given to students to facilitate learning and smooth learning for the Free SHS students. He also noted that question & answer books were given to students as well as chief examiners report and free uniform.
